SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Readings:

1 Corinthians,2, 1-5

Gospel: John, 14: 21 - 26 (English & Lebanese):

In today's Gospel, Jesus says: "Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me." What does that mean? The word love is so often misunderstood and misused. We say things like "I love you", "I love that care" and so on. But what is love really about? For the Old Testament, THE main commandment "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And the second is like it, you shall love your neighbour as yourself. However, Jesus raises the second commandment when he says: "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." This is a high standard but let it not fall on deaf ears. Love is not a feeling. Love is about dying to self, dying to love for: Money, positions, possessions, and all inordinate attachments to worldly things. Be proud of being Christian but know that your Christ demands love and truth is the heart. He demands action, he demands that you lay down your life for him. Jesus did not say: "Take up your pillow and follow me, he said take up your cross. Then truly, you will find peace, joy and love.

St. John Fischer (Bishop and Martyr)
June 22

St. John Fischer was born at Beverley, Yorkshire, England, in 1469. He entered Cambridge University as a student at the age of fourteen. He was ordained at the age of twenty-two and held various positions while at Cambridge: Senior proctor, doctor of divinity, and master of Michaelhouse. In 1501, he was elected vice-chancellor of Cambridge, but resigned his post in 1502 to become the chaplain of the King's mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort. He was elected chancellor of Cambridge in 1504, and through his efforts Cambridge grew in prestige as a centre of learning. He was also elected Bishop of Rochester in 1504. His learning, holiness, and devotion to his pastoral duties caused the young King Henry VIII to say there was no better bishop anywhere in the world. King Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon, but John Fischer forcefully upheld the validity of their union. Henry was furious at his opposition and when John refused to sign the Oath of Supremacy stating that Henry VIII was head of the English Church, he was arrested and imprisoned. "Not that I condemn anyone else's conscience. Their conscience may save them, and mine must save me." The year was 1534. While in prison, Pope Paul III made John Cardinal. After ten months in prison, he was sentenced to death. Carrying a small copy of the New Testament, he went to the place of execution. To the crowd gathered there he stated that he was dying for his faith in the Catholic Church and asked their prayers. Then he recited the Te Deum and the Psalm, "In you I hoped, O Lord," and was beheaded on June 22, 1535.

Prayer

Strengthen and prepare my soul, good Jesus, and help me do something for you. For no one could possibly receive as much as I have and give nothing in return. Whatever it takes, Lord, may I not come before you with empty hands, since we are rewarded according to our deeds. Here is my life, my honour, my will; I give all to you. Do with me what you will. I can do little, but approaching you I can do all things, if you do not leave me.

Amen.
