SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Readings: 2 Corinthians,3, 1-6

Gospel: Matthew, 10: 1 -7 (English & Lebanese):

In our Gospel today, Jesus says to the twelve: "And preach as you go saying 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'" We might be tempted to think that this message is old news. On the contrary, it is ever new. Why? Because so many of us have not listened to the Gospel. We have heard the Gospel but remain deaf to its message. What happens when we listen? What will we hear? The message of Christ: "Repent and believe." These are two halves which make a whole or make us whole. To repent is to be sorry for our sin, but more importantly to desire not to do it again. What about the second part: Believe. Believe what? Wrong question. Believe who. Jesus. He is the answer. To trust him and believe all he says. A lot of what he said is written in the Bible. Why believe the Bible? Why believe Jesus whose words and teachings are in it? Because he is God, and we are not. A big, huge problem and obstacle to faith is that we are willing to believe ourselves, our ideas, theories etc… But we are so reluctant to believe God who created us, the world and nature, which science studies. Faith and science, faith and reason are not (not, not, not) contradictory. For God created the world (which science studies). And creation bears witness to God. Do we? And God also gave us revelations. What did he reveal? You know the answer: wrong question. Who? JESUS. Believing initiates a relationship with God. A friendship with God. Actually it is more like a marriage relationship with God. That is why the Church is called the Bride of Christ.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel
July 18

The Prophet Elijah ascended Mount Carmel to pray for the heavens to open when the country around him was dry and without water. Finally, he saw a small cloud coming in from the sea bearing life-giving rain. In the twelfth century, Christian hermits came to live and pray on this mountain. In their vision, the cloud was a symbol of Mary, the Mother of God, who brought life to a parched world. They honoured her under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and later founded an order devoted to prayer under her patronage.

Most Beautiful Mother of God, Splendor of heaven, you bring fruitfulness to the earth and assist us in our needs. Star of the sea, show yourself a mother to me. Let the healing rain of your comfort fall gently upon me. Hear my voice when I call. Mother of God, I place my cause in your hands.

Amen.
