FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Readings: 1 Corinthians,14: 1-5

Gospel: John, 16: 12 -15 (English & Lebanese):

In our first reading today, St. Paul encourages us to "strive eagerly for the spiritual gifts." Our world knows how to "strive eagerly." All you have to do is turn on a television to see how eagerly people strive fro money, power and sex. These things have become the god of many people and they "strive eagerly" for them. We, Christians, are also to strive eagerly, with passion and zeal. However, we must not strive for money, power or sex but for the spiritual gifts. What does St. Paul mean? "Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be uninformed." (1 Corinthians 12:1) "To each is given the manifestation of the spirit for the common good."(1Corinthians 12:7) The gifts include: "utterance of wisdom", "utterance of knowledge". "faith", "gifts of healing", "the working of miracles", "prophesy", "the ability to distinguish between spirits ", "various kinds of tongues", "interpretation of tongues", These are manifestations of the presence of the Holy Spirit, They are really a part of a normal healthy Christianity, though they we are weak, God makes us strong and through his Spirit part of every Christian Community. Though we are weak, God makes us strong and through his Spirit gives us spiritual gifts for the benefit of the common good. God desires that our community lives in the power of the Holy Spirit and manifest the spiritual gifts; Will we strive eagerly for these spiritual gifts?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I am not an eagle.
All I have are the eyes and the heart of one.
In spite of my littleness, I dare to gaze of one.
Sun of love, and long to fly toward it.
I want to imitate the eagles, but all I can do
Is flap my small wings, what shall I do?
With cheerful confidence I shall stay gazing
At the sun, till I die. Nothing will frighten me,
Neither wind nor rain. O my beloved sun,
I delight in feeling small and helpless in your
Presence, and my heart is at peace.
