FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Readings: 1 Corinthians,2,12-16

Gospel: John, 16: 7 -11 (English & Lebanese):

In our first reading today, we heard St. Paul speak about the natural and supernatural. Christians need to see life and everything in it with supernatural eyes, ears, etc… We must see that behind the mundane lies God and his saving work. A primary example of where we need supernatural eyes is during the Mass, especially near the consecration. The priest says "Lift up your hearts." We respond, "We lift them up to the Lord." What we are telling God here is that we will now raise our hearts to him and perceive, see, taste, etc… things in a spiritual way. Soon afterwards, the priest speaks the words of consecration. But because we have lifted our hearts to the supernatural, we know that at the consecration and afterwards, though, we see bread and wine, it is not bread and wine but the body and blood of Christ. We realize that our senses deceive us for we sense bread and wine but we know with our spiritual hearts that is no longer bread nor wine but Jesus, really present: Body, Blood, Soul and divinity. It is fully Jesus, in fact, when Jesus comes in glory on the last day, he is not one drop more glory than is present in the Eucharist which we receive. For it is the same Jesus, but our senses are blind to this, only faith can see.

Prayer
Come adore this wondrous presence
Bow to Christ the source of grace
Here is kept the ancient promise
Of God's earthly dwelling place.
Sight is blind before God's glory,
Faith alone may see his face.
"St. Thomas Aquinas"

St. Thomas

July 3rd

St. Thomas, one of the twelve, was a Jew from Galilee called by Jesus to accompany him on his mission to proclaim the Kingdom of God. When Jesus' life was threatened as he went to raise Lazarus from the dead, Thomas said to the others, "Let us also go, that we may die with him." At the Last Supper, when Jesus spoke of going away to his Father, Thomas replied, "Lord, we do not know where you are going, and how can we know the way?" With the rest of the apostles, Thomas fled when Jesus was arrested and put to death.

On Easter Sunday, Thomas was not with the others when Jesus came into the room where they were. Though, they told him jubilantly, "We have seen the Lord!" Thomas answered, "I will not believe until I put my finger into the nail marks in his hands and his side." The expression, "doubting Thomas," comes from this incident. One week later, when Jesus appeared again to his disciples, Thomas was with them. Jesus said, "Take your finger and examine my hands.

Put your hand into my side. Do not remain an unbeliever. Believe!" Thomas said, "My Lord and my God!" "The unbelief of Thomas has done more for our faith than the faith of the other disciples," St. Gregory the Great has said. Our doubts are answered by the demand of Thomas to know that Jesus' resurrection was real. Thomas is said to have preached the Gospel to the people of India where he was martyred and buried.

Because you have seen me, Thomas, you have believed; blessed are they who have not seen me and yet believe.
