- Readings: , Galatians, 4:21, 5:1
-
- Gospel: Luke, 1: 57-66 (English & Lebanese):
- John the Baptist was born six months before Jesus. He is
a symbol of Elijah who comes before Christ, to prepare his way.
John said about himself: "I am the voice of one crying out
in the desert, make straight the way of the Lord." By the
birth of John, the last prophet of the Old Testament was born.
-
- He was the greatest of all, John said about himself: "The
one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy
to untie." The difference between John, the prophet, and
Jesus, is that one is from earth and the other is part of the
Holy Trinity. All the signs that accompany the birth of John
indicate that the Christian time is near by.
-
- The word "John" means, God is merciful. John was
called by this name as a confession of God's mercy. We will know
from the Gospel that John had a strong personality in all fairness;
he lived by the laws that he preached. He wasn't scared of facing
the king to tell him the truth and defending it, sacrificing
himself. We prepare ourselves for the birth of the Saviour by
reading the Gospel and repentance.

Our Lady of Guadalupe
December 12
On December 9, 1531, ten years after the Spanish conquest of
Mexico, the Blessed Virgin appeared on the Tepeyac hill, then
three miles from Mexico City, to Juan Diego, an Indian convert
who was on his way to catechetical instructions. She told him
she wished a shrine to be built there.
-
- When Juan Diego told Bishop Zumarraga what had happened,
he refused to believe him and asked for a sign. Three days later,
on December 12, the Blessed Mother appeared again to Juan and
told him to go and gather in his woven cloak, roses which she
arranged.
-
- When they were presented to Bishop Zumarraga he saw a picture
of Our Lady of Guadalupe impressed on the cloak. The shrine at
Guadalupe, where the picture is kept, was built in 1709 and is
one of the great Marian shrines in the world and a national treasure
for the Mexican people. The hill of Tepeyac had a special meaning
for the Indian people. A temple dedicated to the mother of a
pagan god once stood there.
-
- The appearance of Mary dressed in their own clothing was
a powerful incentive in the conversion of the native people to
Christianity. Pope Pius XII declared Our Lady of Guadalupe the
patroness of the Americas.
Hail Mary, Full of Grace, pray for us sinners.
