Readings: Ephesians , 4:1-16
Gospel: Luke, 11: 9-13 (English & Lebanese):
In this week's Gospel, Jesus teaches us about prayers, that
mankind knew from the early ages of Christianity. The first Christians
prayed repeatedly the psalms that Jesus prayed on the Cross:
"My God, my God, why have forsaken me?
Father, into
your hands I commend my spirit." Jesus' prayer during his
agony in the garden is inspired from the Psalm 40: "
Here I am, I am coming to obey your will." When we ask
for God's help, we do so as his children, we have the courage
that defeats all fear. We take the stand of God's children, not
the slaves' who await their punishment. When we ask, we are certain
that we will receive. Our trust in God, the Father is great.
He knows our needs before we even ask.
When he gives, God gives abundantly. A good measure, packed
together, shaken down, and overflowing will be poured into our
lap (Luke 6:38). If God asks us to give, he, then, gives the
greatest gifts. When we knock, we indicate that we are not like
the beggar who waits for his brother's generosity to help him
in his daily life. As we ask for God's graces, we know that we
don't deserve them. God's gifts are gratuitous. He doesn't give
us because we gave or for a good deed. If he does so, then we
are on a business level, not on the grace's lever that the Lord
grants us.
We don't receive material graces, instead, we will be entered
into the kingdom. Our father on earth provides for us the food
we need and protects us from evil. God did the same for the first
generation. He gave them the manna and made the water flow out
the rocks. He also protected them from their enemies. All of
these are earthly material gifts, as Jesus said after he multiplied
the loaves. God gives us the graces that don't fade. He gives
us the Holy Spirit, so he doesn't leave us orphans. His Spirit
will accompany us, he prays in us. He teaches us what we say
and what we do.
This Gospel Reading, made us a part of the Trinity.
