NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Readings: 2 Thessalonians,2, 13-17

Gospel: Matthew, 12: 24 -32 (English & Lebanese):

In our first reading today, St. Paul says: "Therefore brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours." Here St. Paul tells us that we must believe not only what the Bible says but also what the Church says.

The Letters St. Paul speaks make up a part of the Bible. The oral statement is the faith of the Church also but not necessarily written down through the bishops. These two sources, scripture and tradition make up the completeness of the revelation. We must believe they are the truths revealed to us by God.

Another important thing for us to do is to inform ourselves about the truths contained in these sources. We should try to be as knowledgeable as possible about these truths because the truth sets us free. So the more we learn and internalize, the more we will be set free." It should be good to set aside a few minutes each day, at the same time each day, and read the Bible, especially the Gospels. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is also a great source to learn what the Church teaches.

Another helpful source to learn what the Church teaches is the book cited below which I used to get some of what I have written here. This is a good advice and anyone who is looking to grow in their relationship with Christ would be wise to take it. For now can we stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by "an oral statement or by a letter of ours" if you have not read the Bible or what the Church teaches.

The Transfiguration of the Lord
August 6th

The Divinity of Christ was made manifest to Sts. Peter, James and John when Jesus appeared before them on Mount Tabor and his face and clothing shone radiantly. His appearance before the apostles was a confirmation to them of his relation to the Church and his role as the Son of God. A feast in honour of the Transfiguration has been celebrated in the Christian Churches of the East since the fifth century. In the Middle Ages, as interest grew in the Holy Land and the Various sites connected with the life of Jesus, this feast was established in the Western Roman Empire.
Lord Jesus Christ, through your Transfiguration on the Mount, strengthen our hearts lest they be broken by the scandal of the Cross. Enlightened by your grace, may we share in the brightness of your glory.
